The annual service checklist

What Furuno says to inspect, torque and grease every year.

Furuno publishes an annual service checklist for the CSH-10. This lesson summarizes it so owners know what a good service visit covers. The work itself is for a qualified technician.

At a glance

  • Flange plate bolts to 169 lb-ft (230 N-m)
  • Shaft guide gap 0.5 mm; guide bolts 20 lb-ft (28 N-m)
  • Soundome recessed at least 1 inch (25 mm) when retracted
  • Raise/lower time: 10 s (CSH1041), 7 s (CSH1040)

About 8 minutes. Part of Own it.

Controllers and settings

Check that the SCU002 controller works, including a smooth trackball, and clean it if needed. If an SCU001 Bluetooth controller is installed, confirm it is paired and that its batteries are free of corrosion. Confirm the CSH10 model, stroke length and installation are programmed correctly.

Hull unit and flange plate

Confirm the hull unit is secured to the flange plate. Torque the flange plate bolts to 169 lb-ft (230 N-m) and inspect the gasket for damage, leakage or corrosion. Lightly coat the sonar shaft with lithium grease and check the grease trap is filled with lithium grease (Mobilux EP2), sealing the plug with Teflon tape.

Hoist unit

Inspect lubrication, drive gear and spur gear for wear, damage or corrosion. Raise and lower it by hand to check for smooth movement. Furuno's warning: power the hoist unit off and disengage the hoist motor brake before moving it manually.

Soundome, tube and shaft

Check the soundome for damage and clean sea growth yearly. Inspect the tube for growth, cracks or delamination, and the shaft and soundome for fishing line. Shaft guides should have a 0.5 mm gap to the tube with guide bolts at 20 lb-ft (28 N-m). With the soundome fully retracted it should be centered and recessed at least 1 inch (25 mm).

Cables and grounds

Inspect the transducer cables for wear and confirm they are seated in the TX/RX boards in the CSH101 transceiver and clamped correctly. Confirm the processor and transceiver are connected to the ship's grounds and free of corrosion.

Performance checks

Auto retraction speed should be set to 15 knots. Raise/lower time should be within 10 seconds for the CSH1041 (600 mm stroke), 8 seconds for a CSH1041 modified to 450 mm, and 7 seconds for the CSH1040 (400 mm stroke). Confirm the NMEA 0183 ports receive valid data (GGA, HDT, SOG, COG, ZDA, MTW), then do a dockside transmission test for range, tilt and gain. Technicians should note any alarms and give the customer orientation if needed.
