Horizontal and vertical beam width

A wider beam sees more; a narrower one separates more.

You can widen or narrow the beam. A wider beam sees more; a narrower one separates targets better.

At a glance

  • Horizontal beam width: 1 to 5, receive beam by bearing
  • Vertical beam width: 1 to 5, transmit and receive
  • Lower values are wider; higher values are narrower

About 5 minutes. Part of Tune the picture.

Horizontal

Changes the receive beam width by bearing, 1 to 5. Lower values widen the beam; higher values narrow it.

Vertical

Changes the beam width for both transmit and receive, 1 to 5, with the same rule: lower is wider, higher is narrower. A narrower vertical beam is easier to aim at a particular depth but is easier to miss with.

Trade-off

Wide gives you a bigger slice of the water and a stronger overview. Narrow gives you sharper separation between a fish and the bottom or surface clutter. The right setting depends on what you are chasing.
