Marks, target lock and the data readouts all rely on data from other equipment. This lesson covers the inputs the CSH-8L MK2 accepts and the setup items that tie them in.
At a glance
- Two serial ports: NMEA 0183 or Furuno CIF
- NMEA 2000 through the IF-NMEA2K2-8L converter
- HEADING ADJ aligns the screen with the bow
- NAV DATA chooses the source of position

What comes in
The processor has two serial ports for NMEA 0183 (versions 1.5, 2.0 and 2.2) or Furuno's CIF format, a speed log input for 200 or 400 pulses per nautical mile, and a gyro input through an AD-100 converter. It accepts sentences including those for current, depth (DBS, DBT, DPT), position (GGA, GLL, RMA, RMC), heading (HDG, HDM, HDT), water temperature (MTW) and speed (VHW, VTG). It outputs a TLL sentence with the latitude and longitude of event and target marks.
NMEA 2000
Furuno's IF-NMEA2K2-8L converter lets a TZtouch2 or TZtouch3 and NMEA 2000 sensors feed position, heading and depth, and shares event output. The sonar cannot read depth from NMEA 2000 directly. Furuno's guide says to turn on only the message types (PGNs) that are not already on the network backbone.
Setup items
After installation the SYSTEM menu holds the items that tie the data in: HEADING ADJ (aligns the screen with the bow at 12 o'clock), AUTO RETRACT, SHIP'S SPD/BR (log or gyro, current, navigation data), LOG PULSE, PORT 1 and 2 speed and format, and NAV DATA (GPS, LC, DR or all). Your installer sets them; know where they are so you can check them after a change.
What needs what
Target lock, fish speed and course, and event marks need speed and heading. The current, water temperature and position readouts need their own data. If a mark seems to drift, check the data before you blame the sonar.
