Target lock, marks and fish speed

Lock a position, drop marks, measure a school and set a fish alarm.

Target lock, marks and the fish alarm are the tools that turn a picture into a decision. Most of them depend on speed and heading data, so check that first.

At a glance

  • Target lock tracks a fixed position and needs speed and heading
  • Up to 10 fish marks and 10 event marks
  • Two FISH marks 1 to 2 minutes apart give speed and course
  • Fish alarm zone must span at least 3 degrees

Target lock

Target lock fixes a position and follows it as the boat moves, so a reef or a buoy stays at the same place on the screen. It needs speed and heading data. It cancels if the target moves more than 1.5 times the range, it follows to a tilt of 55 degrees, and it turns auto tilt off. Furuno's Angler's Guide notes that it tracks reefs well but that tracking fast gamefish is not consistent.

Fish speed and course

Press FISH on a school, wait one to two minutes, and press it again on the same school. The sonar then reports speed and course. Up to ten fish marks are kept. This also needs speed and heading.

Event marks and off center

EVENT drops a mark that holds its geographic position, with up to ten kept. They also send a latitude and longitude to compatible Furuno equipment, and you can keep up to ten own-ship position marks. OFF CENTER moves your boat's mark to the trackball position, so the screen reaches farther in the direction you care about.

Fish alarm and audio

Press ALARM ZONE twice to define a sector; the two bearings must differ by at least 3 degrees, otherwise the zone is the full 360. FISH ALARM turns it on and off, and the alarm level runs 0 to 14. For audio, place the cursor, press R/B, and AUTO TRAIN sweeps the speaker through plus or minus 10, 20, 40 or 60 degrees around that bearing.

Cleaning up

DELETE MARK removes marks, and the ERASE MARKS menu can erase the track, ship, event and fish marks in groups.
