You can measure how fast and in which direction a school is moving with two cursor placements.
At a glance
- Place the cursor on the school's center
- Wait 1 to 2 minutes
- Place it on the same school's center again
- Repeat two or three times
About 5 minutes. Part of Run the CSH-10.
The method
Put the cursor on the center of the school. Wait one to two minutes. Put the cursor on the center of the same school again. The sonar then reports the school's moving velocity and moving course, along with the range from your boat, the depth and the bearing to the fish mark.
Getting a better number
The manual suggests waiting one to two minutes between presses of the key and repeating the measurement two or three times. The wait gives the school time to move far enough to measure.
Why it matters
A school's speed and course tell you whether to run to it, cut it off or let it come to you. Remember that the numbers describe the school, not the boat: with target lock the sonar keeps the school in view while the boat moves.
