User programs and function keys

Save a setup for surface fish, another for deep water, and switch with one turn.

A user program is a saved set of 21 settings, and the CSH-10 holds ten of them. Changing from a surface-fish picture to a deep-water one becomes one turn of a knob instead of a dozen menu trips.

At a glance

  • 10 user programs, P1 to P10
  • Each saves 21 settings and an 8-character title
  • Function keys F1 to F4 on the control unit, F5 to F10 on screen
  • F4 (Erase All) needs a second press within 5 seconds

About 7 minutes. Part of Run the CSH-10 in the CSH-10 course.

What a program holds

The User Prg tab of the menu holds the settings that shape the picture: transmission interval, pulse length, transmission power, chirp, frequency shift, both beam widths, near and far gain, AGC near and far, noise suppression, propeller noise suppression, noise limiter, signal level, the color setting and curve, echo average, both interference rejectors and the two smoothing settings. Those 21 settings belong to the program you have selected, so each of P1 to P10 can look and behave differently.

The USER PROG knob on the control unit selects a program. The CSH-10 remembers the last program you used and brings it back at power-up.

The factory programs

Furuno ships the CSH-10 with ten programs, named in its Operator's Manual:

  • P1 to P4, CHIRP 1 to 4: chirp settings written for sport-fishing vessels. CHIRP 1 has a reduced afterglow tail and is the program the manual recommends for Game Fish Mode. CHIRP 2 has a longer tail. CHIRP 3 suppresses propeller noise strongly; CHIRP 4 suppresses it weakly.
  • P5 and P6, NOCHIRP 1 and 2: for sailfish. NOCHIRP 1 is tuned for low interference; NOCHIRP 2 has a longer tail.
  • P7, BASE9: a standard program with shallow tilt.
  • P8, HAWAII: for blue marlin in deep water.
  • P9 and P10, SHALLOW and PNW DEEP: commercial bottom-fish programs for shallow and deep work.

Treat them as starting points. Your boat, water and sonar software are not Furuno's test boat, and the settings lessons in this course explain what each control changes so you can adapt a program rather than copy it.

Saving your own

Set the picture the way you want it, then register it as a program. You can give it a title of up to eight characters, so a name like CANYON or BAIT tells you what it is at a glance. Programs can be saved to a USB drive and loaded back, which is worth doing before a software update or a service visit. Furuno's Reset User Program restores the factory set if you want to start again.

Function keys

There are ten software function keys. F1 to F4 are keys on the control unit; F5 to F10 exist only on the screen. Hold the cursor at the bottom of the screen for about two seconds to show the bar. The defaults are:

  • F1 and F2: Scan Setting Reset 1 and 2 (the manual's factory resets are a 350 m range at 10 degrees tilt, and a 150 m range at 25 degrees tilt, both with gain off).
  • F3: turns automatic raise and lower on and off.
  • F4: Erase All. Press it again within five seconds to confirm.
  • F5 to F10: vertical beam width, horizontal beam width, frequency shift, near gain, far gain and transmission interval.

To assign your own, hold the left button on a menu item for about a second and choose Register. Not every item can be registered; the manual's menu tree marks the ones that can.

This lesson summarizes Furuno's public documents in our own words. Limits and settings differ by model and software version, so your own manual and your installer have the last word. OmniCSH is an independent project, not a Furuno program.
