The CSH-10 tells you when something is wrong, in red for warnings and yellow for alarms. This lesson covers the messages you are likeliest to see, what Furuno says each means, and what to do.
At a glance
- Red messages are warnings, yellow are alarms
- TRANSDUCER NOT RETRACTED appears after 20 seconds
- SHIP SPD ALARM: over 20 knots lowered or over 18 while moving it
- System > Test runs the self-tests
About 8 minutes. Part of Own it in the CSH-10 course.
Warnings (red)
- ELECTRIC CHARGE: a capacitor in the transceiver did not charge in time. Power the unit off and call your dealer.
- NO RESPONSE FROM TRANSCEIVER UNIT: check the breaker feeding the transceiver.
- TRANSDUCER NOT RETRACTED / NOT PROTRUDED: the transducer has not reached its position within 20 seconds. Causes Furuno lists include a tangled net, a bent shaft or a fault in the drive. The manual describes a manual retract; read the safety lesson first.
- TD WRONG POSITION ALARM: press the key to return the transducer.
Alarms (yellow)
- SHIP SPD ALARM: the boat is over 20 knots with the transducer out, or over 18 knots while the transducer is moving up or down. Slow down. Right-click silences the buzzer.
- AUTOMATIC RETRACT ALARM: the sonar is retracting the transducer because you passed the set speed.
The status line also shows TX Off, TX Start and Stop, Lowering, Raising and Retracted.
Common problems and first checks
- No power: check the cables, the ship's mains and the transceiver fuses.
- Cannot power off or operate: hold the power key for seven seconds.
- Weak echoes: raise transmission power to maximum, then gain, near gain and far gain.
- Noise: check grounding, cable separation, the interference rejector and the signal level.
- Irregular bottom echo: expected in rough seas or at long range. Shorten the range.
- Hull noise: Furuno points to re-greasing.
Error codes
Numbered errors identify the failing part. Furuno's manual lists them in groups: 100 for the transducer position; 115, 116, 139 and 205 for the motion sensor; 200 for the B voltage; 201 and 301 for fans; 206, 207 and 220 to 231 for transmit and receive calibration and boards; 304 to 306 for the transceiver and control unit communication; 310 and 311 for backup memory, where defaults are restored; 320 for disk space; 322 for a low backup battery; 323 for an NMEA port; and 324 for an IP address conflict. Write the number and what you were doing, then give it to your dealer. Do not open the transceiver: it holds high voltage and Furuno's manual has a charge lamp that must be off before anyone touches it.
Self-tests
Under System > Test you can run an Operation Test (software versions, memory, temperatures, battery, voltages, pitch and roll), a Board Test, a Fan Monitor, a Panel test and a Remote control test. Run them as the manual describes, remember that nothing should transmit out of the water, and take a photo of any result you do not understand.
