OMNICSH

Omni sonar vs CHIRP

One looks around. One looks down. Serious boats run both.

They both find fish, and they are completely different instruments. A CHIRP fish finder fires a cone straight down and paints a detailed history of the water column under your keel: species-grade detail, exact depth, bottom hardness. An omni sonar fires in every direction at once and paints the water around the boat, out to hundreds of meters, on every ping.

The difference is the job. The sounder tells you about water you are already on top of. The omni finds the water worth driving to: a bait ball at 400 m off the port bow, a single hard mark shadowing it, which way the school is moving and how fast. That is why a CSH-10 search happens at 10–15 knots with the fleet behind you, and why the sounder takes over when the gear goes in.

Common questions

Do I still need a fish finder if I have omni?

Yes. Captains run both. The omni finds and tracks life out around the boat; the chirp sounder confirms species, size and exact depth once you are on it. Capt. Brandon Walton told InTheBite he pairs omni with a conventional sounder for exactly that.

Which should I buy first?

If your fishing is about covering water and finding scattered pelagics before the fleet, omni changes your day more. If you fish structure straight below the boat, a serious chirp setup first. Most tournament programs that can, run both.
